By Keene Irwin, coordinator of the Weekend Backpack Program

I was in line  with approximately 120 cans of food and 30 Hormel Compleat meals.  I always feels a little bad for the cashier and the folks behind me in line because it is a tedious task to check out backpack groceries.  As an explanation the backpack story is told and more times than not, the cashier relaxes a little.  The cashier this time was an older lady who was nice but harried. After I gave her a brief description of our ministry, she told me that when she was in high school she had to work in the cafeteria to earn money for the food she ate at school.  She commented on how important it is to feed children.  It’s not only what she said, but her countenance.  I could see the memories in her eyes.  Our backpack ministry is a very good thing!
